In short: Gabriele Susanne Kerner, known as Nena, became a global sensation with 1983's 99 Luftballons. Yet, her career spans far beyond that singular chart-topper. From navigating international fame and band breakups to reinventing herself as a solo artist and educator, Nena remains the most successful German pop singer in chart history.

Born in 1960, Gabriele Susanne Kerner adopted the name Nena—Catalan for 'baby girl'—during a childhood vacation. Her musical journey began in 1979 with the band The Stripes, but it was the formation of the band Nena in 1982 that propelled her to stardom. Their debut single, 'Nur geträumt', became an instant hit, quickly followed by the international phenomenon '99 Luftballons'. Despite the song's massive success, Nena maintained that the band was never a political protest group, even as the track topped charts from the UK to the Netherlands.

The mid-1980s brought both personal and professional shifts. Following the band's 1987 breakup, Nena transitioned to a solo career. Her 1989 album, Wunder gescheh'n, became inextricably linked to the fall of the Berlin Wall, though the 1990s proved commercially challenging. By 1995, she was even forced to borrow money from friends to support her growing family. However, a 2002 comeback, featuring re-arranged versions of her classic hits, revitalized her career, leading to a string of successful albums and a record-breaking span between her first and last number-one hits in Germany.

Beyond music, Nena has explored acting, television coaching, and education, co-founding the Neue Schule Hamburg in 2007. Her career has not been without controversy; in 2021, she faced public backlash for her vocal opposition to COVID-19 restrictions and her association with protest movements. Despite these tensions, she has continued to tour and record, maintaining a consistent presence in the German music scene for over four decades. Having sold over 25 million records, she remains a defining figure in German pop, balancing her identity as a mother, activist, and enduring performer.
