Nick Jonas was spotted in a barbershop at six
While his mother had her hair cut, a six-year-old Nick Jonas caught the attention of someone who referred him to a showbusiness manager. By seven he was on Broadway, and a Christmas song he wrote with his father eventually led Columbia Records to sign him and his two older brothers as a band.
Born on September 16, 1992, in Dallas, Jonas was the third son of a songwriter and former Assemblies of God minister and a mother who had taught sign language. He grew up in Wyckoff, New Jersey, homeschooled, and played roles such as Tiny Tim and Gavroche on stage as a child. A solo album released in limited form on September 5, 2004, never got its planned wide release; instead Columbia's new president, Steve Greenberg, heard the brothers on a song and signed them as a trio. They nearly called themselves Sons of Jonas. At 13, in 2005, Nick was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes.
Their first album sold only a limited 50,000 copies at launch, and Columbia dropped them in 2007. Hollywood Records picked them up, and a guest spot on Hannah Montana drew more than ten million viewers. Camp Rock, the 2008 Disney Channel film with Demi Lovato, pulled in 8.86 million viewers, and A Little Bit Longer became their first album to open at number one, still their best seller.
During a hiatus Jonas formed Nick Jonas & the Administration, made his West End debut as Marius in Les Misérables and later starred on Broadway in How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying. The brothers split in October 2013 over what they called a deep rift. Signing with Island Records, Nick scored a number seven solo hit with Jealous, and his 2016 album Last Year Was Complicated reached number two on the Billboard 200.
Acting widened beyond Disney, with roles in Kingdom, Scream Queens and the Jumanji films of 2017 and 2019. The Jonas Brothers reunited in 2019, and in 2026 he released Sunday Best on Republic Records.
