In short: O-Zone became the first Moldovan act to achieve global fame with their hit Dragostea din tei. Despite selling millions of records, the group remained largely anonymous in the United States, where their signature track was better known as the Numa Numa song, popularized by an amateur internet lip-sync video.

Formed in 1999 by producer Dan Balan, O-Zone began as a duo before evolving into a trio with the addition of Arsenie Todiraș and Radu Sîrbu. The group moved from Moldova to Bucharest, Romania, in 2002, where they quickly found success with the track Despre Tine. However, it was their subsequent hit, Dragostea din tei, that propelled them onto the international stage.

The song's path to global ubiquity was unconventional. After fading in Romania, it gained traction in Italy through an unauthorized cover by the duo Haiducii. While the original members felt betrayed by the lack of permission, the cover's success sparked curiosity about the original, leading to a contract with Time Records and a wider European release. By 2004, the track topped charts in nearly a dozen countries, though it never broke into the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States.

In America, the song’s legacy was cemented by Gary Brolsma’s viral Numa Numa Dance video, which featured him dancing to the track. While the song received significant airplay, most Americans never learned the band's name. The group eventually disbanded in 2005 at the height of their popularity, citing personal reasons. Despite their split, the music found a second life in Japan, where their album DiscO-Zone sold over one million copies and earned them prestigious industry awards.

The group has reunited sporadically for concerts, including performances in 2017 and 2019. By 2024, the O-Zone brand transitioned into a tribute act featuring only Arsenie Todiraș. Their influence persists, notably through the 2008 sampling of their signature hit in the T.I. and Rihanna song Live Your Life, which reached the top of the Billboard Hot 100.
