In short: Oceanside, California, is far more than a beach town. Once the site of the largest Spanish mission in the region, this North County city has evolved into a vibrant cultural district. From historic wooden piers to the world's largest surf competition, it balances deep history with a thriving modern arts scene.

The story of Oceanside begins long before its incorporation in 1888. Originally settled by the Luiseño peoples, the area was known as Tacayme, home to villages like Keish and Ikamal. In 1798, Spanish missionaries established Mission San Luis Rey de Francia, which became the largest of all Californian missions. However, the 1833 Mexican secularization act triggered a period of decline and upheaval, including the forced removal of Padre Antonio Peyrí and a subsequent refusal by the Luiseño to work for the new administration in 1835.

By the late 19th century, the landscape was reshaped by farming and the arrival of settlers like Andrew Jackson Myers, whose homestead eventually became the site of the city hall. Today, the city is a designated cultural district, recognized by the California Arts Council for its commitment to the arts. This identity is anchored by institutions like the Oceanside Museum of Art and the California Surf Museum, alongside historic landmarks like the Star Theatre.

The city's modern character is defined by a blend of tourism and community life. It hosts the Super Girl Pro Festival, the world's largest surf competition, which has run annually since 2007. Every Thursday, the downtown area comes alive with the Sunset Market, featuring live entertainment and local vendors. With its 1,942-foot wooden pier—the sixth iteration since 1888—and ongoing urban development, Oceanside maintains a unique position as a gateway between San Diego and Orange County.
