How Robert Lopez became the only person to win the EGOT twice over
In short: Robert Lopez is a singular force in modern musical theater and film. Best known for co-creating Avenue Q and The Book of Mormon, he holds the distinction of being the only individual to win an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony twice, a feat that redefined the speed of artistic achievement.
Born in Manhattan in 1975, Lopez began his musical journey after a serendipitous introduction to piano lessons at Greenwich House Music School. His early influences, including Stephen Sondheim and Billy Joel, shaped a career that would eventually bridge the gap between gritty, adult-themed satire and the polished world of Disney animation. While studying at Yale, he focused intensely on musical theater, intentionally avoiding career paths in law or medicine to pursue his creative ambitions.
His professional breakthrough arrived through the BMI Lehman Engel Musical Theater Workshop, where he met collaborator Jeff Marx. Together, they developed Avenue Q, a puppet-led musical that subverted Sesame Street tropes to explore adult anxieties. The show’s success on Broadway in 2003 paved the way for his collaboration with Trey Parker and Matt Stone on The Book of Mormon, which premiered in 2011. These projects established his reputation for blending dark, cynical humor with infectious, inspirational melodies.
Lopez’s career reached new heights through his partnership with his wife, Kristen Anderson-Lopez. Together, they crafted iconic songs for films like Frozen and Coco, with "Let It Go" and "Remember Me" securing Academy Awards. By 2018, these wins solidified his status as the first double EGOT winner. His work remains remarkably diverse, spanning from the subversive parody of his early career to the high-profile theme music for Marvel’s WandaVision, proving his unique ability to navigate both the irreverent and the mainstream.
