In short: Ros Serey Sothea was the defining female voice of Cambodia's vibrant 1960s rock scene. A prolific artist who recorded hundreds of songs, her life was marked by immense musical success, personal heartbreak, and a haunting disappearance during the Khmer Rouge regime. Her legacy remains a pillar of Cambodian cultural identity.

Born in 1948 in Battambang, Ros Serey Sothea rose from humble beginnings to become a national icon. After winning a 1963 singing contest, she moved to Phnom Penh, where she was mentored by legendary singer Sinn Sisamouth. Her clear, high-pitched voice and versatility—spanning traditional ballads to psychedelic rock—earned her the title 'Queen with the Golden Voice' from Head of State Norodom Sihanouk in 1969.

Despite her professional triumphs, Sothea’s personal life was marred by cycles of domestic violence and instability. She navigated a tumultuous career as a freelance artist, performing in nightclubs and for the Khmer National Armed Forces during the civil war. By the early 1970s, she had even completed paratrooper training, though her primary role remained that of a performer entertaining soldiers on the frontlines.

The fall of Phnom Penh in April 1975 marked the beginning of the end for Sothea and her family. While her exact fate remains unconfirmed, witnesses suggest she was evacuated to the countryside, where she likely perished under the Khmer Rouge. Some accounts claim she was executed in 1978 in Kampong Speu, while others suggest she died of malnutrition in a hospital after the regime's collapse.

Today, Sothea is remembered as a symbol of a lost era. Because the Khmer Rouge destroyed most master recordings, her music survives primarily through reissued vinyl and cassettes. Her sister, Ros Saboeut, spent decades reuniting surviving musicians to preserve this legacy, ensuring that Sothea’s influence continues to resonate through modern Cambodian rock and international tributes.
