In short: Before he was a multi-platinum rap icon, Kirk Jones was a Brooklyn youth whose nickname came from a local street gang. Today, he is a pioneer of the "hip hopera," blending music, film, and narrative storytelling into a unique multimedia experience that defies standard industry labels.

Born in Brooklyn in 1973, Kirk Jones—known professionally as Sticky Fingaz—earned his stage name from his time in the "Lo-Lifes," a local street gang. Instead of participating in violent turf wars or drug dealing, the Lo-Lifes mostly focused on stealing Polo garments from retail stores during that period. His history formed the basis of his identity once Jam Master Jay of Run-D.M.C. found him. in 1991. Jay signed him to JMJ Records as the frontman of Onyx, a group that would eventually release three top-selling albums, including the multi-platinum debut Bacdafucup in 1993.

Fingaz's career is defined by a transition from mainstream rap success to avant-garde artistic experimentation. While Onyx achieved massive commercial success with hits like "Slam," Fingaz began carving out a distinct path with his solo work. His 2001 debut, Black Trash: The Autobiography of Kirk Jones, was a critical success that introduced the "hip hopera" format—a concept album following a fictionalized life story from prison release to death. This narrative approach eventually led him to produce and star in feature films like A Day in the Life and Caught On Tape, released through his own production company, Major Independents.

His versatility extends into a prolific acting career, with over 80 credits across film and television. He has appeared in major projects such as Spike Lee's Clockers and the television series Blade, as well as the comedy series Flatbush Misdemeanors. Most recently, in 2019, he pushed the boundaries of distribution by releasing It's About T.I.M.E. as a "Digital Album Movie." This project, which he wrote, directed, and produced, is available exclusively on his own website, showcasing a move toward total creative and independent control over his intellectual property.
