In short: Formed in Ulaanbaatar in 2016, The Hu blends traditional Mongolian instruments and throat singing with heavy metal. Their unique sound, dubbed Hunnu rock, has propelled them to the top of Billboard charts and into the Star Wars universe, proving that ancient nomadic traditions can resonate with a global modern audience.

The Hu was established by producer and songwriter Bayarmagnai Dashdondog, who handpicked students from the Mongolian State Music and Dance Conservatory. The band members—Galbadrakh Tsendbaatar, Nyamjantsan Galsanjamts, Enkhsaikhan Batjargal, and Temuulen Naranbaatar—were trained in traditional techniques like throat singing and the use of the morin khuur and tovshuur. Their name, derived from the Mongolian word for human beings, reflects an inclusive philosophy that transcends national identity.

Their rise to international prominence was rapid. In 2019, their single Wolf Totem hit number one on Billboard's Hard Rock Digital Song Sales chart, marking a historic first for a Mongolian act. This success led to collaborations with prominent Western rock artists, including members of Papa Roach, Halestorm, and Alice in Chains. The band's influence even reached the Star Wars franchise, where their music was featured in the games Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order and Star Wars Jedi: Survivor.

The band's creative process is deeply rooted in Mongolian history. Their debut album, The Gereg, takes its name from a diplomatic passport used during the era of Genghis Khan. While they have faced challenges, such as being stranded in Australia during the 2020 COVID-19 lockdowns, they used the time to produce new material and engage with fans. By 2026, they had released three studio albums, continuing to expand their sound while maintaining the cultural integrity that first brought them to global attention.
