How a runaway teenager became the voice of Ethiopia's golden age of music
In short: Born in 1940, Tilahun Gessesse defied his family to pursue music, eventually becoming a national icon. Known for his tenor voice, he defined the 1960s, raised millions for famine relief, and earned a state funeral attended by one million people. His legacy remains a cornerstone of Ethiopian cultural history.
Tilahun Gessesse was born in Waliso in 1940. Despite his grandfather's insistence on academic focus, Tilahun was drawn to the stage. At 13, he fled home on foot to reach Addis Ababa, eventually succeeding by hiding in a truck. His professional journey began at the Hager Fikir Theatre before he joined the Imperial Bodyguard Band, where his career faced a temporary setback following a 1960 coup attempt.
By the 1960s, Tilahun was widely celebrated as the preeminent pop singer of his era. His influence was so significant that Emperor Haile Selassie I personally advised him to steward his talent carefully. Beyond his artistic success, Tilahun became a humanitarian force, using his music to generate substantial funds for famine relief efforts throughout the 1970s and 1980s. His discography, primarily in Amharic with some Oromo tracks, spanned decades and included collaborations with figures like Mulatu Astatke.
Tilahun's later years were marked by health struggles, including a 1993 stabbing that left him with a severe neck injury. Despite this, he continued recording, notably in the United States, where he released several CDs that introduced his work to international audiences. He passed away in 2009 due to complications from diabetes. His death prompted a massive state funeral in Addis Ababa, where approximately one million mourners gathered to honor a man who had become synonymous with the nation's modern musical identity.
His impact extended well beyond his lifetime. In 2021, a posthumous album titled Kome Limerkish was released, completing a project he had begun in 2003. Recognized with an honorary doctorate from Addis Ababa University and various lifetime achievement honors, Tilahun is remembered not just for his vocal prowess, but for his enduring role as a symbol of Ethiopian resilience and artistic pride.
