In short: Zhou Xuan was the most famous singer and actress of her generation, known as the Golden Voice for her effortless, high-pitched melodies. Yet, beneath the glamour of her 40-plus films and 200 songs, her life was defined by profound personal instability, mental health struggles, and a series of tragic relationships.

Born Su Pu in 1920, Zhou Xuan’s early life was marked by displacement. After being abducted as a child and eventually adopted by a family in Shanghai, she rose to fame in the 1930s as a member of the Bright Moon Song and Dance Troupe. Her breakthrough came in 1937 with the film Street Angel, which cemented her status as a cultural icon. Her signature songs from the film, such as The Wandering Songstress, remain staples of Mandarin popular music collections today, reflecting the enduring legacy of her vocal talent.

Despite her professional success, Zhou’s private life was turbulent. She married composer Yan Hua in 1938, but the union collapsed within three years amidst rumors of infidelity. Her subsequent relationships were equally fraught; she was allegedly defrauded by a silk merchant and faced a public scandal when her partner Tang Di was imprisoned for fraud and seduction just as they were set to marry in 1952. These personal hardships, coupled with frequent mental breakdowns, led her to spend her final years in and out of institutions.

Zhou Xuan died in 1957 at the age of 37 in a mental asylum in Shanghai. While the exact cause remains debated, her own diary suggested she suffered from cerebritis, and other accounts point to encephalitis following a nervous breakdown. Her legacy has since been kept alive by her two sons, Zhou Min and Zhou Wei, who have both written biographies to reclaim her story from the dramatized versions often seen in television adaptations, which the family has frequently criticized as inaccurate or damaging.
