Dakota Fanning joined the Oscar academy at 12, its youngest member
At seven, Dakota Fanning became the youngest person ever nominated for a Screen Actors Guild Award, for playing Sean Penn's daughter in I Am Sam. Five years later the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences invited her to join, another first. She grew into one of the few child stars whose adult career kept going.
She was born Hannah Dakota Fanning on February 23, 1994, in Conyers, Georgia, outside Atlanta. Her mother played professional tennis and her father minor league baseball, and by family custom she and her younger sister Elle both use their middle names. She acted in small plays at a Woodstock arts centre at five, shot a Tide commercial in 1999, and the family moved to Los Angeles in 2000 for her work. Guest parts on ER, CSI and The Practice came quickly.
Steven Spielberg cast her in the 2002 miniseries Taken and later in War of the Worlds opposite Tom Cruise, praising how fast she sized up a scene. Denzel Washington's Man on Fire made her the child he guards; Roger Ebert called her a pro at only 10. In Nine Lives she held a single unbroken nine-minute scene with Glenn Close, who described her as an old soul, and Kris Kristofferson likened her to Bette Davis reincarnated. By 2006 Forbes ranked her fourth among top-earning stars under 21, with an estimated four million dollars that year.
Offscreen life stayed surprisingly ordinary. At Campbell Hall School she cheered on the varsity spirit squad and was twice voted homecoming queen, graduating in 2011, and from 2011 to 2014 she studied at NYU's Gallatin School, focusing on how women are portrayed in film. Her roles matured with The Twilight Saga, The Runaways and Night Moves.
Recent work has leaned toward prestige television: The Alienist, The First Lady and The Perfect Couple, then Emmy and Golden Globe nominations for playing an American expatriate in Netflix's Ripley in 2025. Film parts continued in Ocean's 8, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and The Equalizer 3.
