In short: In 2006, one of the closest battles in motorcycle racing history came down to a fraction of a second. After fighting back from a massive deficit, Valentino Rossi saw his championship hopes evaporate in the final moments of the season, handing the title to Nicky Hayden.

The 2006 Grand Prix motorcycle racing season was defined by an intense rivalry between Honda's Nicky Hayden and Yamaha's Valentino Rossi. The competition was so tight that Rossi had to overcome a significant 51-point deficit to lead the championship heading into the final rounds. Despite this comeback, the title remained in the balance until the very last race at Valencia.

The season featured several pivotal moments that shaped the final standings. In Portugal, Toni Elías secured a surprise victory by just 0.002 seconds over Rossi. This specific result was a major decider; had there been a tie in the final rankings, Rossi would have won the championship automatically due to having more race victories than Hayden. Instead, the points remained separated by exactly five.

Hayden's path to victory was fraught with obstacles, including being taken out by his teammate Dani Pedrosa at the penultimate round in Portugal. While Hayden only secured two wins compared to Rossi's five, Yamaha’s frequent mechanical issues led to more retirements for Rossi, allowing Hayden to accumulate more podium finishes. Ultimately, a crash by Rossi in the final race allowed Hayden to claim his first and only World Championship.

Beyond the premier class, 2006 saw significant dominance from Aprilia, with Jorge Lorenzo winning the 250cc title with eight victories and Álvaro Bautista taking the 125cc crown with another eight wins. The season also saw logistical shifts, including moving the Qatar Grand Prix to April and the Turkish Grand Prix to April as well.
