Australia's dominance and a tragic mystery defined the 2007 Cricket World Cup in the Caribbean
In short: The 2007 Cricket World Cup saw Australia secure a third consecutive title, extending an unbeaten streak to 29 matches. Yet, the tournament is equally remembered for the shock exits of favorites India and Pakistan, the rise of underdog nations, and the bizarre, tragic death of Pakistan coach Bob Woolmer.
Hosted across the Caribbean for the first time, the 2007 tournament featured 16 teams, the largest field in the event's history. While Australia remained untouchable, the group stages delivered major upsets. Bangladesh and tournament debutant Ireland—both associate members—eliminated heavyweights India and Pakistan, respectively. This shift in the traditional hierarchy was a defining narrative of the early rounds, proving that the established order of Test-playing nations was not as secure as previously assumed.
The tournament was marred by the death of Pakistan coach Bob Woolmer, who was found dead on 18 March 2007, just one day after his team was knocked out by Ireland. Initial reports from Jamaican police suggested the death was suspicious, leading to a murder investigation. However, after an autopsy and a lengthy inquiry, authorities eventually rescinded the murder claim, concluding he died of natural causes. By November 2007, an open verdict was returned, closing a dark chapter that had cast a shadow over the competition.
Logistics and infrastructure also dominated the conversation. The ICC awarded the tournament to the West Indies via a rotational policy, leading to significant investment. Jamaica alone spent US$81 million on pitch-related expenses, including the refurbishment of Sabina Park and the construction of Trelawny Stadium. In total, at least US$301 million was spent on stadiums across the region. Despite the high costs and the spectacle of the opening ceremony, the final itself ended in confusion; umpires incorrectly required the final three overs to be played in near-darkness, later apologizing for the error after Australia had already secured a 53-run victory via the Duckworth-Lewis method.
