In short: For fifty years, the NFL draft was a closed-door affair held exclusively in New York City with limited attendance. That changed in 2015. The league traded privacy for spectacle, moving the event to Chicago and creating a massive public festival that redefined how fans experience the selection of new talent.

The shift in 2015 was born from frustration. After management at Radio City Music Hall forced the NFL to postpone its 2014 draft due to scheduling conflicts, the league opened bidding for a new site. They specifically sought a venue that could accommodate both an indoor selection ceremony and an adjacent space for a fan festival. Out of 12 interested cities, the NFL narrowed the field to Chicago, Los Angeles, and New York City before ultimately selecting Chicago.

The resulting event at the Auditorium Theatre and Grant Park was a radical departure from tradition. It marked the first time the draft was held outside of New York City since 1965. To accommodate the public, the league established "Draft Town," a free-admission festival in Grant Park that drew 200,000 visitors. While the first three rounds remained indoors, the final round moved outdoors to an area called "Selection Square" to be viewed by the open-admittance crowd.

This expansion of scale also introduced new logistical changes and historical milestones. The draft saw two Heisman Trophy winners—Jameis Winston and Marcus Mariota—selected with the first two overall picks, a first for the league. Additionally, the NFL tightened the clock, reducing selection times for seventh-round and compensatory picks to four minutes. These innovations in public accessibility and logistical efficiency have since become the standard for subsequent drafts.

The 2015 draft also highlighted the complexity of team selection mechanics. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers secured the first overall pick due to a league-worst record and a weaker strength of schedule than the Tennessee Titans. Additionally, 32 extra selections were granted to franchises experiencing a deficit in free agent players during the prior season.
