In short: In a rare political shift, Alaska's 2018 gubernatorial election saw the incumbent Independent governor withdraw just weeks before voters headed to the polls. Despite the late-stage endorsement of his Democratic rival, the Republican candidate secured a decisive win, marking the only time a Republican gained a governorship that year.

The 2018 contest for Alaska's top executive office featured a complex dynamic involving incumbent Independent Bill Walker, Republican Mike Dunleavy, and Democrat Mark Begich. Originally a three-way race, the election landscape shifted dramatically on October 19, 2018, when Walker suspended his campaign. This decision followed the resignation of his running mate, Lieutenant Governor Byron Mallott, just three days earlier. Although Walker endorsed Begich, both he and Mallott remained on the ballot because the legal deadline for withdrawal had passed on September 4.

The primary process itself had been unconventional. In April 2018, a court ruling allowed non-Democrats to compete for the Democratic nomination, a strategy initially intended to prevent vote-splitting between Walker and a Democratic challenger. However, when Mark Begich entered the race, Walker shifted to a fully independent path. The election was notable for being the only independent-held governorship contested in a state that had supported Donald Trump in the 2016 presidential election.

When the votes were tallied on November 6, 2018, Mike Dunleavy emerged as the victor. This result represented the only instance in 2018 where a Republican candidate successfully captured a governorship from another party. The geographic breakdown of the results showed a split in support: while areas like the Fairbanks North Star Borough and the Valdez–Cordova Census Area shifted from Independent to Republican, several other regions, including the North Slope Borough and the Bethel Census Area, moved from Independent to Democratic control. As of 2026, this election remains the most recent transition of partisan control for the Alaska governor's office.
