In short: Once the Philippines' largest free-to-air television network, ABS-CBN has undergone a radical transformation. Following the non-renewal of its broadcast franchise in 2020, the media giant pivoted from traditional terrestrial broadcasting to a multi-platform digital powerhouse, reshaping how millions consume content through streaming and strategic partnerships.

The history of ABS-CBN is rooted in the mid-20th century, beginning with Bolinao Electronics Corporation (BEC), founded on June 13, 1946, by American engineer James Lindenberg. After shifting to radio, BEC sought to introduce television to the Philippines. By 1952, the company was renamed Alto Broadcasting System (ABS), and it achieved its first full broadcast on October 23, 1953, during a party at the residence of Antonio Quirino. The network's current identity emerged after the 1957 acquisition of ABS by the Chronicle Broadcasting Network (CBN), founded by Eugenio López Sr. and Fernando Lopez.

For decades, the network operated as a terrestrial powerhouse, colloquially known as "Channel 2" or "Dos." It was a regional pioneer, being the first in the region to broadcast in color and transitioning to high-definition in 2007. However, a significant shift occurred in 2020 when its broadcast franchise expired, leading to a complete halt of terrestrial operations by May 5, 2020. Rather than exiting the market, the company restructured to prioritize content production and digital distribution.

Today, ABS-CBN operates as a multi-platform content provider. It reaches audiences through the Kapamilya Channel, the iWantTFC streaming platform, and partnerships with local networks like A2Z and TV5. This diversified model includes international distribution via The Filipino Channel (TFC) and collaborations with global streamers like Netflix and Amazon Prime Video. While the company faced a net loss of ₱425.65 million in the first quarter of 2025, it reported consolidated revenue of ₱4.23 billion, reflecting a strategic pivot toward a digital-first, global media presence.
