In short: In the 1990s, AC Ajaccio wasn't just playing for trophies; it became a tool of political influence. During Corsica's 'Years of Lead,' the island's second-largest guerrilla group seized control of the club to establish dominance in their stronghold city.

The history of AC Ajaccio is inextricably linked to the volatile politics of Corsica. While founded in 1910, the club became a central figure in the 'Years of Lead' during the 1990s—a period defined by intense infighting between militant groups. The FLNC-Canal Habituel, a guerrilla organization seeking to expand its influence in Ajaccio, took over the entire management team of the club. This move effectively turned the sports institution into a political stronghold.

The group installed high-ranking members as figureheads: Alain Orsoni (the group's leader), Michel Moretti, and Antoine Antona. Notably, this leadership structure persisted even after the FLNC-Canal Habituel dissolved in 1997. The club’s management remained under the influence of these specific individuals for decades; Moretti served as president until 2008, when he handed the role to Orsoni, who led until 2015 and briefly returned in 2022.

Beyond politics, the club's history is marked by extreme rivalry. The 'Corsica derby' against Bastia has been famously violent; during a 1946 Corsican Cup final, spectators were actually issued umbrellas to both shield themselves from and participate in fan violence after a disputed penalty. Today, the club faces severe financial instability. After a series of administrative relegations and appeals between 2024 and 2025, Ajaccio was eventually excluded from national competitions and fell to the seventh tier of French football before securing promotion back to the sixth tier in April 2026.
