How a corporate disappearing act transformed a struggling airline into a major carrier
In short: In 1997, the troubled ValuJet sought a way to distance itself from a disastrous safety reputation. Its solution was a strategic move that many called a corporate disappearing act: acquiring a smaller rival and adopting its name to emerge as AirTran Airways.
The origins of AirTran Airways are a complex web of mergers and rebrandings. Formed in 1993 as Conquest Sun Airlines by leaders from Conquest Airlines and Destination Sun Airways, the company was bought by AirTran Corporation one year later. This move led to a renaming that reflected its new parent company and a shift of headquarters to Orlando, Florida.
The airline's most significant transformation occurred through its relationship with ValuJet. Following two fatal crashes—Flight 597 and Flight 592—ValuJet faced a crisis of public perception regarding its safety culture. To distance itself from this troubled past, the ValuJet holding company acquired AirTran Airways and its parent, Airways Corporation, in November 1997. The company then rebranded itself as AirTran Holdings, effectively absorbing the ValuJet legacy under the AirTran name.
By the early 2000s, AirTran had established itself as a major low-cost player. It became the world's largest operator of the Boeing 717-200, a fleet that eventually grew to more than 70 Boeing 717s. At its peak, the airline operated nearly 700 daily flights, with a primary hub at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, handling nearly 200 daily departures from that location alone.
The AirTran era eventually reached its conclusion through acquisition. On May 2, 2011, Southwest Airlines acquired AirTran Airways and its parent company. The integration was gradual, culminating in the airline's final revenue flight on December 28, 2014.
