Who are the Albanians and where did their mysterious name actually originate?
In short: The Albanians are a distinct Balkan nation with a language unlike any other in Europe. While their history is marked by centuries of shifting borders and foreign empires, their true origins remain a subject of intense academic debate, hidden behind ancient texts and the rugged, isolated mountains of their homeland.
The identity of the Albanians is deeply rooted in the Paleo-Balkan landscape. Most scholars agree they are at least partial descendants of the Illyrians, though the exact mix of ancient groups that formed their ethnogenesis remains contested. Their language, the only survivor of the Albanoid branch, likely coalesced in the Western Balkans between 3000 and 2500 BCE. This unique linguistic heritage was shielded for centuries by the region's challenging, mountainous terrain, which allowed the population to maintain a distinct culture despite being situated at a major political crossroads between East and West.
Historical records of the people are elusive. While Ptolemy mentioned an Illyrian tribe called the Albanoi in the 2nd century, the first undisputed reference to Albanians as a specific ethnic group appears in the 11th-century writings of Michael Attaleiates. Even this is complex; historians still argue over whether earlier 11th-century mentions of the name referred to the ancestors of modern Albanians or to foreign Normans. By the 12th century, however, the Principality of Arbanon had emerged in central Albania, marking a clear historical presence.
The name itself has evolved significantly. While the world knows them as Albanians—a term derived from the root 'alban' linked to mountainous topography—the people call themselves Shqiptarë. This endonym, which gained prominence in the 17th and 18th centuries, is often linked to the word for eagle or the verb 'to speak.' This shift reflected a growing national consciousness as the population navigated the pressures of the Ottoman Empire, which they served as soldiers and officials, and the later rise of an independent state in 1912.
