In short: High in the Malagasy highlands, Antsirabe offers a rare escape from the tropical heat. Known as the "City of Water," this high-altitude retreat features natural hot springs, a cool subtropical climate, and a unique cultural landscape where traditional pulled rickshaws serve as a primary mode of transport.

Situated at an altitude of approximately 1,500 meters, Antsirabe experiences a subtropical highland climate. This elevation allows for temperatures that can drop below 0°C at night during the winter months, making it one of the cooler regions in Madagascar. The city's nickname, "visy gasy" or "the Malagasy Vichy," refers specifically to the numerous thermal springs found in the area, which have been utilized for bathing since the early 20th century.

The city's identity is deeply tied to its geography and history. The name Antsirabe literally translates to "the place of much salt." Its development as a retreat center began in 1872, established by Norwegian missionaries who sought a cooler climate. This history of seeking refuge and wellness is reflected in the local architecture, including the thermal bath center opened in 1917 and the Hôtel des Thermes, where figures like the Moroccan royal family stayed in exile in 1955.

Beyond its reputation for wellness, Antsirabe is a hub of industrial and agricultural activity. It is a major producer of apples, yielding roughly 10,000 tons annually, and hosts a variety of industries ranging from textiles to food processing. The city is also defined by its unique transport: the "pousse-pousse," or pulled rickshaw, is a local emblem, with over 5,600 recorded in 2006. These rickshaws, along with cycle rickshaws and "touktouks," navigate a landscape shaped by both its volcanic origins and its role as a regional capital.
