Auckland FC: the expansion side that conquered two leagues in one season
In short: Founded in early 2024, Auckland FC achieved unprecedented success by winning both the A-League and the OFC Professional League in the 2025–26 season. This rapid ascent saw them dominate local rivals and secure continental dominance shortly after their inaugural competitive matches.
The club's rise was remarkably swift. Established on 14 March 2024 under owner Bill Foley, the club secured its A-League license in November 2023. By clinching the 2024–25 regular season Premiership, they made an instant impact in the A-League Men, marking the first time a New Zealand-based club has secured A-League silverware. They followed this by winning the 2025–26 Championship, defeating Sydney FC 1–0 in a sellout crowd of 28,374.
Auckland's dominance extends beyond domestic borders. In May 2026, they were crowned champions of the inaugural OFC Professional League after a 2–1 victory over South Melbourne FC. This dual success in the 2025–26 season marked a historic period for the club, which plays its home matches at the 17,500-seat Mount Smart Stadium, currently known as Go Media Stadium for sponsorship reasons.
The club's identity is deeply tied to its ownership. To pay tribute to the sports squads at his former school, the United States Military Academy, Foley chose the 'Black Knights' title. The club's crest features a black knight visor and stripes, symbolizing Foley's Black Knight Sports & Entertainment. While the club initially explored stadium developments at Western Springs Stadium, they ultimately decided in July 2025 to extend their agreement with their current venues.
The club also maintains a fierce rivalry with Wellington Phoenix. In the 2024–25 campaign, Auckland became the first A-League team to go undefeated in rivalry matches, winning all three fixtures, including a 6–1 victory on 22 February 2025. By the 2025–26 season, they extended this unbeaten run with a 5–0 victory over the Phoenix.
