From failed auditions to breaking global streaming records
In short: Before becoming a powerhouse of Chinese cinema, Bai Lu faced rejection from one of the world's largest entertainment agencies. Today, her projects shatter platform records and secure global distribution on Netflix, proving that persistence can turn a local career into an international phenomenon.
Born in Changzhou in 1994, Bai Lu began her professional journey with a significant setback: she participated in SM Entertainment's overseas audition in 2012 but was unsuccessful. She pivoted to modeling for Taobao in 2015 before signing with Huanyu Film in 2016. This period of transition saw her move from short films and minor roles, like playing a noble lady in Zhaoge (2016), to landing dual-role starring positions in historical dramas like Untouchable Lovers (2018).
Her trajectory shifted toward massive commercial success between 2019 and 2023. The series One and Only (2021) generated over eight million searches on social media, while Till the End of the Moon (2023) became a global breakout hit. It became the most-watched title on Youku since 2020 and secured international distribution via Netflix, reaching audiences across the United States, Europe, and Oceania. In late 2023, her drama Story of Kunning Palace broke the IQIYI 'hit index' of 10,000, a milestone for female-centric productions.
Beyond acting, Bai Lu has established herself as a significant commercial figure. She was ranked as the '2022 Most Improved Celebrity' in commercial value and serves as an ambassador for luxury brands like Jimmy Choo (promoted to global ambassador in 2026) and Chopard. After a decade with Huanyu Film, she announced her departure in July 2026 to establish her own studio, marking a transition from a contracted talent to an independent industry leader.
