How a former rock-climbing instructor became a historic voice in Congress
In short: From teaching middle school history and guiding climbers in Vermont to the halls of the U.S. House, Becca Balint’s political ascent is marked by breaking long-standing barriers for women and the LGBTQ+ community in American governance.
Born in 1968 in Heidelberg, West Germany, Becca Balint’s path to politics was shaped by a family history deeply affected by the Holocaust. Her father, a Hungarian-Jewish immigrant, arrived in the U.S. in 1957, while her grandfather was killed on a death march from the Mauthausen concentration camp. These roots, combined with her early experiences facing discrimination, fueled an interest in how government actions impact minorities.
Before entering national politics, Balint established herself in Vermont through diverse roles, including serving as a teacher, a columnist for the Brattleboro Reformer, and a rock-climbing instructor at summer camps. Her legislative career began in the Vermont Senate, where she was elected in 2014 as the first openly acknowledged lesbian to serve. She later rose to become the Senate's majority leader and president pro tempore, becoming the first woman and openly LGBTQ person to hold those leadership positions in the state.
During the 2022 polls, Balint achieved a landmark victory, becoming Vermont's initial female and openly LGBTQ congressional representative; notably, her win followed a period when no other US state had yet sent a woman to Congress. that had not previously elected a woman to Congress. Her congressional work has been marked by complex stances on international and domestic issues, ranging from opposing certain police-immigration enforcement measures to calling for a ceasefire in the Gaza war and criticizing the Israeli government's actions.
