From tennis scholarship to Hollywood: the multifaceted journey of Boris Kodjoe
In short: Before becoming a recognizable face on television, Boris Kodjoe was a high-level collegiate athlete. A former tennis standout at Virginia Commonwealth University, his athletic aspirations were cut short by injury, leading him toward a successful career in modeling and acting that spans from dramatic series to major film franchises.
Born in Vienna, Austria, on March 8, 1973, Boris Frederic Cecil Tay-Natey Ofuatey-Kodjoe has a diverse heritage. He is the son of Eric Kodjoe, a Ghanaian physician, and Ursula, a German psychologist of Jewish descent. His family history includes a matrilineal great-grandmother who was a victim of the Holocaust, while his maternal grandmother survived the war in hiding.
Kodjoe's transition from sports to entertainment was prompted by a back injury that ended his tennis career. Before his acting breakthrough, he was a four-year letterman for the Virginia Commonwealth University Rams. He holds significant records at the university, including being ninth in school history with 75 career singles wins and tied for third in doubles victories with 66.
He portrayed Damon Carter in the Showtime series Soul Food, which ran between 2000 and 2004. He has since appeared in various roles, including Dr. Will Campbell in Code Black and Robert Sullivan in Station 19. His filmography includes titles such as Love & Basketball, Brown Sugar, and the Resident Evil franchise. People magazine selected him for their 2002 list of the "50 Most Beautiful People in the World."
Beyond acting, Kodjoe has explored comedy through playing a fictionalized version of himself in the parody series Real Husbands of Hollywood. He is married to his former Soul Food co-star, Nicole Ari Parker; the couple wed in Gundelfingen, Germany, on May 21, 2005.
