In short: The British Rail Class 331 is a fleet of electric trains designed to modernize Northern England's rail network. By utilizing a shared platform with diesel counterparts, these units prioritize operational efficiency and passenger comfort. Their standout feature is exceptional acceleration, significantly reducing travel times compared to the older trains they replaced.

Introduced to service on 1 July 2019, the Class 331 fleet consists of 43 electric multiple units manufactured by CAF. The order was part of a broader strategy by Arriva UK Trains to overhaul the Northern franchise, replacing outdated rolling stock like Pacers and Sprinters. CAF secured the contract by offering a unified platform—the Civity—that allowed for both electric and diesel units (the Class 195) to share identical interiors, driver cabs, and layouts. This commonality was intended to simplify maintenance and driver training, a factor that helped CAF beat out competitors like Bombardier.

The engineering focus of the Class 331 is on efficiency and passenger flow. The units feature a doors-at-thirds arrangement and wide vestibules, specifically designed to speed up boarding and disembarking to reduce dwell times at stations. Performance is a key differentiator; the Class 331 is among the fastest-accelerating electric units in the United Kingdom, capable of reaching 125 km/h in just 45 seconds. This is a massive improvement over older models like the Class 321, which required over two minutes to reach the same speed.

Beyond performance, the trains are equipped with modern amenities including air conditioning, wi-fi, and automated information systems with screens in every carriage. The fleet serves major routes across the North West and West Yorkshire, connecting hubs like Manchester Airport, Liverpool, and Leeds. With a projected 35-year lifespan, these units are expected to remain in operation well beyond 2050. The fleet has also become a canvas for local identity, with specific units named for regional pride, such as The Bradfordian, or decorated with special liveries to honor the NHS.
