The king who stood against Rome and survived the ultimate defeat

Caratacus & The Roman Invasion of Britain · 11:19 · Video: History Time · Watch at the source

In short: When the Roman legions first landed on British soil, they expected a swift conquest. Instead, they met Caratacus, a king who unified disparate tribes into a formidable resistance. His story is one of strategic defiance, a narrow escape into the Welsh wilderness, and a final, shocking surrender.

Caratacus was a prominent Celtic leader who ruled a vast territory in southern Britain during the 1st century CE. As the son of Cunobelinus, he belonged to the Catuvellauni tribe, but his authority extended over several other groups, most notably the Trinovantes. His kingdom was geographically expansive, encompassing the Atrebates of Hampshire and likely the Dobunni of Gloucestershire.

When the Roman invasion began under the reign of Emperor Claudius, Caratacus emerged as the primary figurehead of the native resistance. He successfully organized opposition against the Roman general Aulus Plautius between 43 and 47 CE. This period of conflict demonstrated the ability of local leaders to coordinate diverse tribal interests against a technologically superior imperial force.

After his initial defeat, Caratacus retreated into the rugged terrain of south Wales to continue the fight. He was eventually cornered and defeated by Ostorius Scapula in 50 CE in the territory of the Ordovices, located near the Welsh marches. His flight to the Brigantes proved to be his undoing; the queen of the Brigantes, Cartimandua, betrayed him by delivering him to the Romans.

In a notable turn of historical irony, Caratacus and his family were not executed. They were instead featured in a victory parade for Claudius. The Emperor granted them a pardon and allowed them to live out their lives, a move that underscored the Roman policy of integrating defeated elites into the imperial structure.
