How a railroad terminus in the desert became a hub for cars and baseball
In short: Founded in 1879 as a simple railway stop, Casa Grande has evolved from a mining-boom settlement into a modern Arizona city. Beyond its agricultural roots and desert climate, the city has hosted everything from wartime relocation camps and Cold War testing ranges to professional baseball and electric vehicle manufacturing.
The city of Casa Grande, located in Pinal County, Arizona, was established in 1879 to support the Southern Pacific Railroad during a regional mining boom. Originally named Terminus, the settlement was renamed in 1880 after nearby Hohokam ruins. While the town faced significant challenges, including devastating fires in 1886 and 1893 and a decline in mining, it transitioned into an agricultural center and was officially incorporated in 1915.
Throughout the 20th century, the city served diverse roles. During World War II, the Gila River War Relocation Center operated nearby, housing Japanese-American internees, including notable figures like Pat Morita and Kenichi Zenimura. Later, during the Cold War, the area hosted the Casa Grande Photogrammetric Test Range, where concrete arrows were used to calibrate aerial cameras. The city also became a destination for baseball, hosting the San Francisco Giants for spring training starting in 1961 and supporting the long-running Casa Grande Cotton Kings.
Today, Casa Grande is a growing city with a population estimated at 70,156 as of 2025. Its economy has shifted from historical reliance on cotton and dairy to a mix of service industries and high-tech manufacturing. In 2020, Lucid Motors opened a major car manufacturing plant in the city, marking a new chapter in its industrial history. Despite its growth, the city retains its desert character, experiencing the intense heat of the Sonoran Desert and the seasonal influence of the North American Monsoon.
