In short: Before it became a rapidly expanding suburb of Austin, Cedar Park was a quiet ranching community defined by a single spring. Today, this Texas city balances its deep archaeological roots with modern growth, serving as a hub for professional sports, education, and a population that has surged in recent decades.

The history of the land now known as Cedar Park stretches back thousands of years. Archaeological evidence from the Wilson-Leonard site indicates that the area has been inhabited continuously since approximately 5,000 BC. Long before European settlers arrived in the 19th century, the region was home to various indigenous groups, including the Comanche, Lipan Apache, and Tonkawa peoples.

In the mid-1800s, the area was recognized as Running Brushy, a name derived from the local spring that served as the headwaters for a nearby creek. The community began to take its modern shape in 1873, when George and Harriet Cluck purchased 329 acres of land that encompassed the spring. By 1882, the arrival of the Austin and Northwestern Railroad brought new connectivity, though the town was briefly renamed Bruggerhoff to honor a railroad official—a title locals quickly rejected. Emmett Cluck officially renamed the town Cedar Park in 1887.

For much of the 20th century, the community remained small, only incorporating as a city on February 24, 1973, when its population was estimated at 1,765. The subsequent decades saw explosive growth as the influence of nearby Austin expanded. By 2013, the U.S. Census Bureau identified Cedar Park as the fourth-fastest growing city in the nation. Today, the city spans 25.6 square miles and serves as a center for regional activity, hosting the H-E-B Center, which serves as home to the Texas Stars and the Austin Spurs, and maintaining a diverse infrastructure that supports nearly 80,000 residents.
