In short: Since 1956, the Cessna 182 Skylane has balanced the demands of utility and performance. Currently ranking as the second most common Cessna being manufactured, this aircraft developed from a simple tricycle gear design into a complex, high-powered plane suitable for intricate international tasks.

The 182 Skylane rapidly became a core component of US flight history after debuting in 1956 as a tricycle gear version of the Cessna 180. While the 172 remains the most popular Cessna model, the 182 occupies a distinct niche for those requiring higher gross weights and greater performance. Its evolution is marked by significant engineering milestones, including the 1958 introduction of the 'Skylane' deluxe version, which added full exterior paint and improved engine cooling. Over decades, it has seen a wider fuselage, swept tailfins with 'omni-vision' windows, and various landing gear configurations. A major technical pivot occurred in 1978 with the introduction of the retractable gear R182 and TR182 models. These variants offered a 10-15% improvement in climb and cruise speeds, as well as a 10-15% boost in fuel economy compared to fixed-gear counterparts.

However, these gains came with a trade-off: increased maintenance costs and decreased gear robustness. The R182 system utilizes hydraulic actuators powered by an electrically driven pump, featuring a specific warning system that triggers if the gear is retracted while the throttle is reduced or flaps are extended beyond 20°. The aircraft's global footprint is notable, with production occurring beyond the United States. Argentina produced the A182 variant via DINFIA, and France produced the F182 via Reims Aviation. Production of the 182, which uses avgas and normal aspiration, ceased during 2012 before resuming in 2015. Furthermore, Cessna explored alternative fuels, planning a JT-A model in 2013 to run on Jet-A diesel fuel, though no specific timeline for that model was ever established.

Note: The 182 has undergone several 'restarts.' The aircraft built after 1996 featured significant changes, including a different engine and new seating designs, distinguishing them from the earlier production lineage.
