Why does a Japanese region share its name with the Middle Kingdom?
In short: The Chūgoku region of Japan literally translates to middle country, a name that mirrors the Chinese term for China. While the etymology remains debated, the region’s identity is defined by a mountain range that splits its geography, culture, and economy into two distinct worlds: the industrial south and the rural north.
The Chūgoku region, located on the western tip of Honshū, comprises the prefectures of Hiroshima, Okayama, Shimane, Tottori, and Yamaguchi. Its name, Chūgoku, historically categorized provinces based on their distance from the administrative center in Kansai. While some suggest it referred to middle-distance provinces, this theory is contested because many provinces within the region did not fit that classification. Another perspective suggests it identified the provinces situated between Kansai and Kyūshū, serving as a vital link to mainland Asia.
Geography dictates the region's internal divide. A mountain range running east-west splits the area into two zones named after the yin and yang philosophy. The southern San'yō side, facing the Seto Inland Sea, is a hub of heavy industry and urban density, anchored by the metropolis of Hiroshima. Conversely, the northern San'in side remains largely agricultural and less industrialized. This contrast is reflected in the population, which peaked at roughly 7.8 million in 1991 before entering a steady decline that began in 1992.
The linguistic overlap with China has caused historical friction. Before the end of the Second World War, the term shina was used to refer to China to avoid confusion with the Japanese region. However, due to its association with the Sino-Japanese War, the term became offensive and was abandoned. Today, the tourism industry often promotes the area as the San'in-San'yō region to maintain clarity. Despite these complexities, the region’s cultural footprint persists, appearing in literature like the Tales of the Otori trilogy and earning a reputation as a land of martial arts.
