Choteau, Montana, is a quiet rural hub defined by fossils, birds, and rugged mountains.
In short: Nestled along the Rocky Mountain Front, this small Montana city serves as a gateway to prehistoric discoveries and natural wonders. While its population remains modest, the town anchors a region rich in paleontological significance, migratory bird habitats, and a unique history tied to the expansion of the American West.
Choteau, the county seat of Teton County, was originally established as a trading post by A. B. Hamilton in 1873 and officially platted in 1883. It takes its name from Pierre Chouteau Jr., a French fur merchant and explorer whose legacy is also marked by sites in South Dakota. Today, the city is entirely rural, maintaining a semi-arid climate that features cold, dry winters and warm, humid summers.
The region is globally recognized for its paleontology, particularly the nearby Egg Mountain site. This area is a key stop on the Montana Dinosaur Trail, and the local Old Trail Museum displays the Maiasaura, the Montana state fossil. The original remains of this hadrosaurid were discovered west of town by Marion Brandvold in 1978, a find that fundamentally changed the understanding of dinosaur behavior and led to the formal naming of the genus.
Beyond its scientific importance, the landscape supports diverse wildlife. Freezout Lake, located just south of the city, serves as a major destination for bird watchers, with hundreds of thousands of birds gathering during peak migration periods and 230 species documented in the area. The nearby Ear Mountain Wildlife Management Area further protects local populations of bighorn sheep and mule deer, while the Rocky Mountain Front provides a dramatic backdrop for the community.
Modern Choteau operates under a mayor-council government, with Chris Hindoien serving as mayor in 2023. The city maintains its own school district and medical center, serving a population of 1,721 as of the 2020 census. Despite its small size, the town remains a focal point for regional history, education, and the preservation of the unique geological and biological heritage of the American West.
