In short: Before he was a titan of haute couture, Christian Lacroix intended to be a museum curator. His transition from studying 18th-century French paintings to creating opulent, theatrical fashion allowed him to treat the runway as a living gallery for history's most extravagant costumes.

Born in Arles in 1951, Christian Lacroix pursued an academic path rooted in preservation. He studied art history at the University of Montpellier and later enrolled at the Sorbonne to write a dissertation on dress in 18th-century French painting. Simultaneously, he studied museum studies at the École du Louvre with the specific goal of becoming a curator. This scholarly foundation deeply informed his aesthetic; rather than following minimalist trends, Lacroix championed a resurgence of extravagant haute couture during the late 1980s.

His design philosophy is characterized by a 'topsy-turvy' mix of historical references—including corsets and crinolines—blended with global folklore and theatricality. He is noted for his use of vibrant Mediterranean colors, artisanal trades like embroidery and beadwork, and the iconic 'le pouf' dress featuring a ball skirt. His work often bridges the gap between luxury and informality, drawing from his experience in theater to create opulent, fantasy-driven pieces that contrast with modern functionalism.

Despite his creative success, Lacroix’s business journey was marked by significant financial volatility. From 1987 to 2005, his house faced cumulative losses exceeding €44 million, eventually leading to a 2009 administration where he personally financed his final Haute Couture collection. While the fashion house struggled for profitability, Lacroix expanded his influence into interior design via his company XCLX, creating uniforms for Air France in 2004 and designing interiors for landmark hotels like Hotel Bellechasse and Le Notre Dame in Paris.
