In short: Before entering the halls of Westminster, Chuka Umunna was a teenage chorister at Southwark Cathedral. This musical start preceded a diverse career spanning law, high-stakes politics, and a recent ascent to a global leadership role in sustainable finance at JPMorgan Chase.

Chuka Umunna’s trajectory is marked by significant shifts in political and professional identity. Born in Lambeth in 1978 to a Nigerian father and an English-Irish mother, his upbringing was described as typically middle-class and privileged. He was educated at Hitherfield Primary School and Christ Church Primary School before moving to the independent St Dunstan's College, where he played the cello and sang in the choir at Southwark Cathedral.

His political journey saw him transition from a teenage member of the Liberal Democrats to a prominent figure in the Labour Party. He served as the MP for Streatham from 2010 until 2019, holding several roles including Shadow Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills. However, his tenure was marked by ideological friction; he resigned from the Shadow Cabinet in 2015 due to differences with the leadership under Jeremy Corbyn. In 2019, he left Labour to form The Independent Group, later joining the Liberal Democrats before unsuccessfully contesting the Cities of London and Westminster seat.

In the years following his departure from Parliament, Umunna pivoted back to the financial sector. After joining JPMorgan Chase in 2021 as a Managing Director within their Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) advisory group, he was promoted in July 2024. He now serves as the Global Head of Sustainable Solutions and EMEA Head of Green Economy Investment Banking, where he co-leads the firm's global ESG practice.
