Why the common buzzard is the UK's most successful bird of prey
In short: Once struggling in the mid-1900s, the common buzzard has staged a remarkable recovery to become the most widespread raptor in the UK. These adaptable predators, known for their mournful mewing calls and soaring flight, thrive across diverse landscapes, proving that even large birds can flourish in human-altered environments.
The common buzzard, Buteo buteo, is a medium-sized raptor that has become a fixture of the British countryside. While they were once in decline, conservation efforts have helped their numbers rebound significantly since the mid-1900s. Today, they are classified on the Birds of Conservation Concern Green List, indicating a healthy and stable population. Estimates suggest there are between 57,000 and 79,000 breeding pairs across the UK, where they are frequently spotted perching on roadside fences or soaring high above open fields and woodlands.
These birds are highly opportunistic hunters, which likely contributes to their success. While they primarily target small mammals like rabbits and rodents, their diet is remarkably flexible. When primary prey is scarce, they readily consume carrion, earthworms, and large insects. This adaptability allows them to maintain a presence in various habitats, including farmland, heathland, and upland areas. Despite their prevalence, they remain vulnerable to illegal persecution, including trapping and poisoning, which continues to be a significant threat to their long-term safety in the wild.
Identifying a buzzard requires a keen eye, as their plumage varies from dark brown to much paler shades. However, they are distinct in flight, often holding their broad, rounded wings in a shallow 'V' shape while soaring. They possess a short, fanned tail with a prominent dark band and dark trailing edges on their wings. Their mournful call, which can sound surprisingly like a cat, is a common auditory clue for birdwatchers. Though they are sometimes confused with other raptors like the red kite, the buzzard's unique silhouette and behavior make it a distinct and masterful predator of the British skies.
