In short: Crickhowell is a quiet town in the Brecon Beacons, but it holds a surprising dual legacy. It served as the namesake for a fictional settlement in The Lord of the Rings and gained national attention in 2015 for a bold, grassroots protest against multinational corporate tax avoidance.

Nestled along the River Usk in southeastern Powys, Wales, Crickhowell is defined by its geography and history. Its name, derived from the Welsh 'Crug Hywel' or 'Hywel's mound,' likely refers to a local castle mound or a nearby Iron Age hill fort. The town's connection to literature is equally distinct; in a 1966 letter, J.R.R. Tolkien confirmed that the name of the town inspired the fictional 'Crickhollow' featured in his fantasy trilogy, The Lord of the Rings.

Beyond its literary ties, the town is known for its independent spirit. In 2015, Crickhowell made headlines when residents launched a protest against the tax practices of large corporations. By adopting similar legal strategies to those used by multinationals, the town highlighted the ease with which major companies avoid UK corporation tax. This act of civil disobedience underscored a long history of local autonomy, even though the town never officially held a borough charter and saw its residual claims to that status extinguished by the Municipal Corporations Act of 1883.

Today, the community serves as a hub for tourism and outdoor activity, drawing visitors to the Black Mountains and the Brecon Beacons for pursuits like hillwalking, fly-fishing, and rock climbing. The town's architecture reflects its longevity, featuring a 17th-century stone bridge with an unusual design—twelve arches on one side and thirteen on the other—and a Grade II* listed market hall dating to 1834. While the town has evolved through various administrative changes, including the 1974 redesignation of its parish into a community council, it remains a focal point for the surrounding rural area.
