Why this Texas town celebrates its history with an actual race for live turkeys
In short: Named for the Spanish word for hide, Cuero began as a cattle trail stop before finding fame through turkey ranching. Today, the city maintains its unique identity through a local festival where, unlike typical human-run races, the competitors are actual turkeys sprinting toward the finish line in a turkey trot.
Located in DeWitt County, Texas, Cuero was founded in 1873, though its origins trace back to 1872 when Gustav Schleicher established it as a way-station along the Chisholm Trail. The town's name reflects the leather industry that briefly flourished there before giving way to ranching. Its population expanded significantly during the 1870s and 1880s as residents relocated from the coastal city of Indianola following devastating hurricanes. By the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the region had become a hub for turkey ranching, a tradition that remains deeply embedded in the local culture.
This agricultural heritage is celebrated annually at Turkey Fest, which features events like the prettiest turkey contest and the turkey race. The town's connection to the bird is so iconic that in 1972, CBS News reporter Charles Kuralt visited to perform his own turkey call for an On the Road segment. Beyond its avian fame, Cuero serves as a repository for regional history, housing the Chisholm Trail Heritage Museum and the Pharmacy and Medical Museum of Texas, with several local districts listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Geographically, the city sits near the confluence of Sandies Creek and the Guadalupe River, covering about 4.9 square miles. While the town has evolved from its Old West roots—which included post-Civil War clan feuding—it remains a significant producer and shipper of cattle. Modern Cuero is a community of 8,128 residents, according to the 2020 census, balancing its historical preservation efforts with contemporary life, including a sprawling Christmas display in the municipal park that has grown to feature over 100 scenes since its inception in 2000.
