Where the rainforest meets the reef in a prehistoric landscape
In short: The Daintree Rainforest is not just a forest; it is a living relic of the ancient world. Covering more than 1,200 square kilometres, this site constitutes the Australian continent's biggest unbroken stretch of tropical jungle, providing a unique view of ancient, long-lasting wilderness.
Located on the northeast coast of Queensland, the Daintree Rainforest serves as a cornerstone of the Wet Tropics of Queensland World Heritage Site. This region was officially recognized by UNESCO in 2015, a designation that highlights its universal natural values. The landscape is defined by its immense scale and ecological continuity, providing a sanctuary for diverse species such as the cassowary, tree kangaroo, and the Boyd's forest dragon. The area spans approximately 1,200 square kilometres. It sits north of the towns of Mossman and Cairns. The region serves as a vital habitat for the rare tree kangaroo.
The park is divided into two distinct sections: Mossman Gorge and Cape Tribulation. Mossman Gorge is characterized by the crystal-clear waters of the Mossman River, which flow over granite boulders. In contrast, Cape Tribulation offers a dramatic geological intersection where rainforest-clad mountains sweep down to meet long sandy beaches. This specific area is notable for being the unique point where the rainforest meets the reef. The park is situated between 80km and 150km north of Cairns. Visitors can find sheltered picnic tables and toilets at the park office. The site also provides facilities for campervans and tent camping.
The land is the traditional country of the Eastern Kuku Yalanji Aboriginal people, who are the Traditional Owners of the Daintree National Park (Cape York Peninsula Aboriginal Land). Visitors to this region are encouraged to respect this special place, which remains a vital part of the Australian natural and cultural heritage. While it offers stunning scenery, the wilderness also demands caution, as it is home to crocodiles and marine stingers. The park office provides an interactive map for navigation. No campfires are permitted within the park boundaries. Travelers are advised to be aware of marine stingers and crocodiles.
