The Texas town that saved the French wine industry
In short: In the mid-19th century, a devastating epidemic threatened to destroy Europe's vineyards forever. While the wine industry faced collapse, a local horticulturalist in Denison, Texas, was developing a scientific solution that would eventually earn him the French Legion of Honor.
Founded in 1872 by the Missouri–Kansas–Texas Railroad, Denison, Texas, grew from a vital railroad division point into a significant commercial center. Its strategic location near the Red River and the Oklahoma border made it a key transportation hub during the American industrial era. This connectivity helped the city host a diverse array of notable figures, ranging from the legendary gunfighter Doc Holliday, who maintained a dental practice there in 1875, to the 34th U.S. President, Dwight D. Eisenhower, who was born in the city on October 14, 1890.
Beyond its political and western connections, Denison holds a unique place in agricultural history. During the mid-19th-century phylloxera epidemic, which decimated the vast majority of wine grapes across Europe, local horticulturalist T.V. Munson pioneered methods to create phylloxera-resistant vines. His work was so impactful that it earned him induction into the French Legion of Honor and established a sister-city relationship between Denison and Cognac, France. Today, this viticultural legacy is preserved through the T.V. Munson Viticulture and Enology Program at Grayson College.
Modern Denison is a central part of the Texoma region, situated about 73 miles north of Dallas. The city’s economy is driven by agriculture, light industry, and tourism, bolstered by its proximity to Lake Texoma and Eisenhower State Park. As of the 2020 census, the city had a population of 24,479, with a median age of 40.3 years.
