How a child abandoned at a bus stop became a global vocal sensation
In short: Diana Ankudinova’s journey from a traumatic childhood in Russia’s far east to international fame is a testament to resilience. After being rescued from abuse, she discovered that singing helped her overcome severe speech difficulties. Today, she is a celebrated performer whose viral talent has captivated millions of viewers worldwide.
Born in 2003 in the Primorsky Territory, Diana Ankudinova faced profound adversity early in life. Abandoned at a bus stop during winter at age three with a broken collarbone, she was eventually placed in an orphanage. Her life changed when Irina Anatolyevna Ponik, a massage therapist at a local sanatorium, pursued legal guardianship in 2008. To escape the lingering fear of her biological mother, the family relocated to Tolyatti in 2012, a move intended to provide safety and better access to musical education.
Diana’s path to music began as a therapeutic intervention. At four-and-a-half years old, she struggled with severe speech impediments, leading pathologists to suggest singing lessons. She quickly excelled, joining local ensembles like Zhemchuzhinki and studying at the Tolyatti House of Culture. Her early career was marked by numerous regional and international competitions, including a gold medal at the 2011 Planet of Childhood festival in Harbin, China.
Her national breakthrough arrived through the NTV talent show You Are Super!, designed for children without parental care. After winning the 2018 season and the 2019 superseason, her popularity surged. Notably, she became the first contestant on The Voice projects to garner over a million YouTube views after failing to pass the initial blind auditions. This digital success paved the way for her professional career, including her 2020 enrollment at the Russian Institute of Theatre Arts and the successful 2021 release of her debut album, D.A., which exceeded its crowdfunding goal by 236 percent.
Today, Ankudinova’s influence extends far beyond Russia, with her performances in multiple languages reaching a global audience. Despite the personal losses of her vocal coach and adoptive father in 2020, she has continued to build her career, supported by the stability provided by an apartment in Moscow gifted to her by jury member Igor Krutoy following her 2018 victory.
