In short: Introduced in 1997, the E2 series Shinkansen became a cornerstone of Japan's high-speed rail network. These versatile trains, capable of navigating both 50 Hz and 60 Hz power supplies, bridged regional gaps and set new standards for speed, eventually inspiring the design of high-speed trains across the globe.

The E2 series was launched by East Japan Railway Company (JR East) in 1997 to serve the Tōhoku and Hokuriku Shinkansen lines. These trains were engineered for versatility, with early models designed to handle the dual-frequency power supplies required for different regions of Japan. The fleet was divided into 8-car and 10-car configurations, with the latter featuring retractable nose doors for coupling with other trainsets. Over the years, the E2 series underwent various design iterations, including the E2-1000 series, which introduced wider windows, single-arm pantographs, and conventional sliding doors to replace the earlier plug-door design.

Beyond its daily service, the E2 series pushed the boundaries of rail technology. In April 2003, a modified E2-1000 set reached a record-breaking 362 km/h during high-speed testing on the Jōetsu Shinkansen. The design's influence extended internationally as well; in 2004, China ordered 60 trainsets based on the E2-1000, which were later designated as the CRH2A. This technology transfer marked a significant moment in the global expansion of Shinkansen-derived engineering, following the earlier export of the 700T model to Taiwan.

As the fleet aged, JR East began a phased withdrawal of the E2 series starting in 2013. While most units were retired, some cars found new life as preserved exhibits or training facilities, such as the car at the Shinkansen Education and Training Center. By April 2025, the active fleet had dwindled to just six 10-car sets. Looking toward the future, JR East has announced the development of the E10 series, which is slated to succeed the E2 and E5 series on the Tōhoku Shinkansen by fiscal 2030.
