The man who sold out a kingdom for a title

Eadric Streona: Anglo-Saxon England's Greatest Villain? · 9:48 · Video: History Time · Watch at the source

In short: In the 11th century, Eadric Streona became the ultimate symbol of political betrayal. A man of low birth who rose to the highest ranks of power, he navigated the treacherous waters of Anglo-Saxon politics by siding with enemies, eventually becoming so dangerous that his own allies had to execute him.

Eadric Streona’s rise to power is a masterclass in political opportunism. Despite being of 'ignoble birth,' he was elevated to the revived office of ealdorman of the Mercians in 1007 by King Æthelred II. This appointment was likely a strategic move by the king to consolidate power over south-central England under a single command. His influence was cemented not just through office, but through kinship; he married Æthelred’s daughter, Eadgyth.

However, his legacy is defined by his role as an 'archtraitor' during the existential struggle between the English and the Danes. While history records various instances of his 'bad counsel' and minor betrayals, his most significant act of treachery occurred in 1015. As King Æthelred lay dying, Eadric abandoned his allegiance to the English crown to side with the Danish King Canute against the resistance of Edmund Ironside.

The consequences of his betrayal were swift and total. After the peace was established, Canute rewarded Eadric by restoring his earldom of Mercia. Yet, the very treachery that fueled his rise ultimately sealed his fate. Fearing that Eadric would betray him again, Canute ordered his execution at Christmas in 1017. Eadric remains a haunting figure of the Anglo-Saxon period, illustrating how personal ambition can undermine national sovereignty. His specific family background remains a mystery to historians today. He was also known by the alternative spelling Edric.
