Ecuador: A landscape of extremes and a nation in multicrisis

In short: Ecuador is a geographical paradox where snow-capped Andes, steaming rainforests, and volcanic peaks collide. Yet, beneath this surreal natural diversity lies a modern struggle for stability as the nation navigates a complex multicrisis of narcoterrorism, economic inequality, and institutional fragility.

Ecuador is recognized as one of the world’s most environmentally diverse countries, serving as a cornerstone for modern environmental science. Its unique geography provided the backdrop for foundational scientific breakthroughs: Charles-Marie de La Condamine led the first expedition to measure the Earth's circumference there, while naturalists Alexander von Humboldt and Charles Darwin conducted research that helped establish the core theories of ecology, geography, and evolutionary biology.

The nation's economic identity is built on a mix of historical exports and natural resources. It is a major exporter of petroleum, cacao, bananas, and flowers. Interestingly, it became famous for Panama hats—straw hats shipped to Panama in the mid-18th century for gold seekers and later worn by canal workers in the early 19th century. Unlike many Latin American neighbors, Ecuador maintains two primary centers of commerce: the Andean highland capital, Quito, and the vibrant port city of Guayaquil.

In recent years, this diversity has been overshadowed by a 'multicrisis.' Since 2018, violence linked to drug trafficking escalated as local gangs seized competitive positions in the trade. This led to a breakdown in state control, where gangs began bribing security chiefs and operating from prisons with impunity. The situation reached a breaking point on January 9, 2024, when the government declared an internal armed conflict. These security issues are compounded by the lingering effects of COVID-19, which saw 150,000 children stop studying between 2020 and 2021 and exacerbated existing poverty and inequality.
