Before Spartacus, a Syrian entertainer declared himself King and shook Rome

Eunus & The First Servile War (135-132 BC) · 9:19 · Video: History Time · Watch at the source

In short: Most people recognize Spartacus, but history has largely obscured the first great slave revolt. Between 135 and 132 BCE, a Syrian entertainer named Eunus led a massive uprising in Sicily, capturing cities and even minting his own currency to challenge the Roman Republic.

The First Servile War was a significant rebellion against the Roman Republic that took place in Sicily. Unlike the more famous gladiatorial revolt led by Spartacus two generations later, this conflict was led by Eunus, a Syrian slave who had worked as an entertainer. As the rebellion gained momentum, Eunus proclaimed himself King Antiochus, signaling a profound challenge to Roman authority. While Spartacus is a household name today, Eunus's story has often been relegated to a minor footnote in the broader historical record.

The scale of the uprising was immense, with the rebels organizing a fighting force of approximately 70,000 slaves. The movement successfully captured the city of Enna and established control over large portions of central and eastern Sicily. The rebels even demonstrated their sovereignty by issuing their own coins, a powerful symbol of their organized resistance. The rebels' ability to maintain such a large force and govern territory was bolstered by their control over significant regions of the island.

Rome's early military efforts to quell the revolt failed, as several Roman armies were defeated by the rebel forces. However, the tide turned in 133 BCE when the consul Lucius Calpurnius Piso Frugi recaptured Enna. The suppression was completed the following year by his successor, Publius Rupilius. Eunus was eventually captured and died in prison, but the war remains a stark illustration of the intense social tensions and the growing slave population in the 2nd century BCE Roman world.
