A legal comedy-drama exploring the chaos of family dysfunction and sobriety
In short: When a video of a lawyer vomiting in court goes viral, Abigail Bianchi hits rock bottom. Now, she must navigate her own recovery while working alongside an estranged father and two half-siblings in the complex, often messy world of family law.
The Canadian television series Family Law, created by Susin Nielsen, premiered on September 16, 2021, on Global. Set in Vancouver, British Columbia, the comedy-drama follows Abigail "Abby" Bianchi, a lawyer and recovering alcoholic. Her professional life is complicated by her personal history; after a video of her vomiting in court went viral, she finds herself working under her estranged father, Harry Svensson, as part of her probation. The production was initiated by Corus Entertainment through a ten-episode order for SEVEN24 Films and Lark Productions. Principal photography for the series commenced in early March 2020.
The narrative centers on the intersection of legal practice and personal dysfunction. Abigail, portrayed by Jewel Staite, must manage her clients' family issues while navigating relationships with her father, Harry (played by Victor Garber), and her half-siblings, Daniel and Lucy. The family tree is complex, with Harry having married three times: first to Abigail's mother, Joanne Kowalski; second to Daniel's mother, Zina Selva; and finally to Lucy's mother. The cast includes Zach Smadu as Daniel and Genelle Williams as Lucy. Additional recurring characters include Maggie Roth, a paramedic and Lucy's ex-wife.
The series has seen significant international reach. While it airs on Global in Canada, it is broadcast on The CW in the United States. In Europe, the show has been distributed via Sky Investigation in Italy and Sky One in Germany. Although the series was renewed for a fourth season in January 2024, creator Susin Nielsen confirmed in December 2025 that the show would conclude with that final season. In the Nordics, the third season was released on Viaplay. The series is also available on ITV x within the United Kingdom.
