How the FIA decides who belongs in the elite tier of motorsport
In short: In the high-stakes world of sports car racing, not all drivers are created equal. The FIA uses a rigorous ranking system to separate the legends from the newcomers. But what specific feats actually earn a driver the prestigious Platinum status?
The FIA Platinum Categorisation represents the highest tier within the FIA Drivers' Categorimisation system. Applied to top-tier series including the IMSA SportsCar Championship and FIA World Endurance Championship, this system evaluates competitors by their age, results, and past successes. These rankings are not static; the FIA revises and publishes the updated categorisations every November.
To reach the Platinum level, a driver must meet stringent criteria. One primary pathway is finishing in the top five of the general classification in an FIA Tier 1 championship, such as Formula 2, Formula E, IndyCar Series, Super Formula, or the Supercars Championship. Furthermore, any individual possessing a former FIA Super Licence qualifies for the top level without delay.
The system also rewards specific endurance milestones. A driver might earn promotion by securing a podium finish in the Pro category of legendary races like the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the 24 Hours of Daytona (GTP), the 24 Hours of Spa, or the Nürburgring 24 Hours. Additional routes involve securing Hypercar class titles at the FIA World Endurance Championship or dominating GT World Challenge events throughout America, Asia, and Europe.
However, the prestige of the Platinum rank is subject to age-based limits. While the FIA retains the discretion to grant Platinum status for exceptional performances not explicitly listed, the category is not permanent. Once a driver reaches their 55th birthday, they are demoted to the Gold Categorisation. As of May 2026, the FIA's official records show that 232 drivers hold the Platinum license.
