From junior circuit to world No. 6: The rapid ascent of Flavio Cobolli
In short: Born in Florence and raised in Subiaco, Flavio Cobolli has transformed from a promising junior talent into a top-tier professional tennis star. With three ATP titles and a historic run to the 2026 French Open final, the Italian athlete has solidified his place among the world's elite competitors.
Flavio Cobolli, born on 6 May 2002, began his journey in the sport with early childhood lessons. His development was marked by a steady progression through the ITF junior circuit, where he maintained a 90–50 singles win-loss record and achieved a combined world ranking of No. 8 in January 2020. His transition to the professional level began in earnest in 2021, when he secured his first ATP match win as a wildcard at the Emilia-Romagna Open in Parma.
The path to the top was defined by consistent improvement across the Challenger and ATP tours. After winning his first Challenger title in Zadar in 2022, Cobolli steadily climbed the rankings, breaking into the top 100 in October 2023. His breakthrough year arrived in 2025, a season highlighted by his first ATP title in Bucharest, a second ATP 500 title in Hamburg, and a pivotal role in Italy's successful Davis Cup campaign. By the end of that year, he had established himself as a formidable presence on the international stage.
The 2026 season saw Cobolli reach new heights, including a career-high ranking of world No. 6 in August. His performance at the 2026 French Open, where he reached the final before falling to Alexander Zverev, marked a significant milestone in his career. Beyond his individual achievements, Cobolli—who counts Novak Djokovic as his tennis idol and supports AS Roma—has become a central figure in Italian tennis, currently serving as the nation's No. 2 singles player.
