In short: The capital of Guyana, known as the Garden City of the Caribbean, sits at the mouth of the Demerara River. Much of this historic, colonial-era city lies below high-tide level, relying on an intricate, centuries-old network of canals and a massive seawall to keep the Atlantic Ocean at bay.

Georgetown serves as the administrative, financial, and retail heart of Guyana. Established in 1782 during a brief French occupation of the Dutch colony of Demerara, the settlement was originally named Longchamps before becoming Stabroek in 1784. It was finally renamed Georgetown in 1812 under British rule to honor King George III. Today, the city is a blend of Dutch and British colonial architecture, featuring iconic structures like the tall, timber-built St. George's Cathedral and the cast-iron clock tower of the Stabroek Market.

The city's geography presents a constant engineering challenge. Situated on flat coastal plains, parts of Georgetown sit as low as 2 meters below high-tide level. To prevent flooding, the city utilizes a protective seawall and a sophisticated system of canals equipped with kokers, or sluices, to manage water drainage. This infrastructure is vital, as the city experiences a hot, tropical rainforest climate with high humidity and year-round rainfall, meaning there is no true dry season.

Georgetown has evolved significantly through both growth and disaster. While the city retains many wooden colonial buildings raised on brick pillars, major fires in 1945 and 1951 led to the reconstruction of many business districts using reinforced concrete. Modern development continues to reshape the landscape, with new infrastructure like the 2022 Heroes Highway easing traffic congestion. Despite its status as a hub for government and international organizations like the CARICOM Secretariat, the city remains a place of stark contrasts, ranging from exclusive gated communities to neighborhoods facing significant economic hardship and crime.

Beyond its administrative role, Georgetown acts as the primary commercial gateway for the country. It is home to the nation's largest port and serves as a major hub for exporting commodities like sugar, bauxite, gold, and diamonds. With a population recorded at 125,683 in the 2022 census, the city remains the focal point of Guyanese life, balancing its colonial heritage with the demands of a rapidly developing modern economy.
