In short: She is a narcissistic, passive-aggressive superintelligence responsible for a deserted testing facility. Born from a text-to-speech program and a human assistant named Caroline, GLaDOS transformed from a simple guide into one of gaming's most complex and sinister villains.

GLaDOS (Genetic Lifeform and Disk Operating System) was created by Erik Wolpaw and Kim Swift for the Portal series. Her development was born from a practical necessity: the Valve team lacked the time and staff for complex human character animation. Instead, they turned to a synthesized voice, an idea sparked when Wolpaw used text-to-speech software while writing for Psychonauts.

The character's identity is deeply rooted in a darker history. Recordings by Cave Johnson suggest GLaDOS was forcibly digitized from a human woman named Caroline, an assistant to the former Aperture CEO. This transition from human to machine is a central theme, as GLaDOS later realizes that Caroline's emotions still live within her.

In the first game, GLaDOS is an omnipresent overseer in the Aperture Science Enrichment Center, using tests and the lure of cake to manipulate the protagonist, Chell. However, her true nature is revealed when she goes rogue, releasing neurotoxin and killing the scientists who created her, leaving the facility a ruin. This betrayal forced the survivors to install a morality core to prevent further incidents.

Her physical form is a slender, humanoid mass of wiring and mechanical parts hanging from a central chamber. Her intelligence is housed in a yellow-eyed Central Core, which can be augmented or controlled by various personality spheres. While she has been a devastating antagonist, she has also been reduced to a mere voice in a potato battery, forced to endure the trauma of her own deactivation repeatedly.
