A city born from a struggle for fresh water
In short: The name Guaynabo is believed to be derived from the Taíno word for "Here is another place of fresh water." This linguistic root reflects the municipality's early identity, which eventually evolved from a 16th-century Spanish settlement into a modern hub of media, commerce, and advanced medicine.
The history of Guaynabo is marked by early colonial shifts and land disputes. In 1508, Juan Ponce de León founded Caparra, the first European settlement in Puerto Rico, on land that now comprises part of Guaynabo. By 1521, San Juan replaced this site, which was left vacant. A U.S. National Historic Landmark, Caparra's remains still exist. On this site sits the Puerto Rico Colonization and Conquest Museum. The ruins of this abandoned site are preserved as a historic landmark. Visitors can explore artifacts from the era at the museum on the grounds.
The modern municipality was officially founded in 1769 by Pedro R. Dávila following a struggle to divide land from the municipality of Bayamón. During the late 18th century, Irish settlers Thomas O'Daly and Miguel Kirwan established Hacienda San Patricio, a sugarcane plantation in the area. While the plantation no longer exists, its original land now serves as the city's central business district and the San Patricio Plaza shopping mall. The area was previously known as Buinabo before its current name was adopted. The municipality is geographically spread across nine distinct barrios.
Today, Guaynabo serves as a vital economic and cultural center in the San Juan metropolitan area. It hosts the studios for WAPA-TV, Puerto Rico's most-watched television station, and serves as the headquarters for major international firms like Microsoft and Toshiba. It also houses the Professional Hospital Guaynabo, which is the only city in Puerto Rico with a hospital specialized in advanced vascular surgery, having performed the island's first AxiaLIF surgery in 2009. The city also serves as a primary base for the Puerto Rico Telephone company. It is home to the headquarters of the airline Iberia's San Juan-area offices.
