Guigang: The Distinguished Harbour Connecting Central China to the Pearl River Delta
In short: Nestled in eastern Guangxi, Guigang serves as a critical logistics artery for the People's Republic of China. Once known as Gui County, this prefecture-level city leverages its strategic position between five major regional hubs to bridge central China with the economic powerhouses of Hong Kong and Macau via the Xi River.
Guigang occupies a pivotal geographic space in eastern Guangxi, situated between the major cities of Nanning, Guilin, Liuzhou, Beihai, and Wuzhou. Spanning an area of 10,601 square kilometers, the city functions as a vital transportation and business nexus. Its infrastructure includes a rail line, an expressway, and a significant port on the Xi River, which provides a direct maritime link to the Pearl River Delta. This connectivity facilitates the movement of more than 100 million tons of goods annually, cementing shipping and logistics as cornerstones of the local economy.
The city's administrative structure comprises three urban districts, one county-level city, and one county. According to the 2020 Chinese census, the total population reached 4,316,262, with 1,277,231 residents living in the built-up metro area consisting of the Gangbei and Gangnan Districts. By the end of 2024, the registered population had grown to 5,647,800, while the resident population stood at 4,294,100. The demographic makeup is primarily Cantonese Chinese, complemented by various minority tribes.
Economic activity in Guigang is diverse, spanning industries such as chemical manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, metallurgy, textiles, and food processing. Agriculture remains a foundational element, with the region producing rice, corn, sugar, medicinal herbs, tobacco, tea, and lotus root. Despite its industrial output, the 2015 nominal GDP per capita was approximately $2,400, categorizing it as a relatively poor county in southern China. The city also maintains modern infrastructure like the Guigang Sports Centre Stadium, a 30,000-capacity venue for football that opened on 21 June 2016.
